This painting was done in response to my first overseas experience. I spent a week in the mountains of Guatemala with poverty stricken people. I painted walls in the school there and played with the children at recess. One thing that really stood out to me about the children, was that no matter where the girls went, they were always holding hands with their sisters or friends. I came back to the US and I missed that. I missed seeing the closeness of childhood friends. We live in a society where we don't really touch. In Guatemala friends hold hands, in Brasil people greet each other with one kiss.
