This was a commission for a couple in Hawaii, for their bedroom. They were first loves, in their early teens, and parted after high school. They married other people, but were reunited 20 years ago, and have been together ever since. The top portion (lighter red color with the darker red underneath) symbolizes young love and the love they had for each other in their early years. You will note that there is a pattern in the paint, which means that they both had a connection and an interweaving of their lives and heart from the beginning. The Kanji characters, at the bottom of this section, are the ancient characters for ‘Love.’ The section is then divided by a dark brown (faux) bamboo like piece, which means they then started a new era of their love story. The faux bamboo goes straight across in piece 1 and 3, but meets head to head in piece 2 (middle piece), which represents the two of them, and the small space between is where they let their relationship drain away into the next section.
The second section is where I have done a crackling technique, which represents their fracture relationships they experienced when they were away from each other. The red in this section is the same red that is in the background of the first section, and continues into the third section, and this is the love they had for each other from the beginning.
The bottom section is their life and love since they have been together again, and you will note that the red gets richer, the heavy texture and honeycomb weaving is the strong bond their love has become with their life together. The faux bamboo goes straight across, and does not have an opening, in all three pieces, which symbolizes the start of their new life together, with their past being in the past, and their future is rich and full of love…………Unconditional Love.
Each piece is 24" X 30" X 2.5" - Mixed Media, with over 30 layers of paint, gels, and washes on canvas. The Triptych changes with the light, or the viewer's position in the room. |
