ARMAGH (24” x 36”- mixed media) Loss of identity, loss of freedom, loss of the ability to move —only a few of the atrocious acts endured by the Irish female political prisoners held in Armagh Women’s Prison. This institution was constructed in 1780 but gained its harsh and draconian reputation in the 1970’s and 80’s when women were subjected to strip searches on a regular basis, oftentimes by males. The manner in which these searches were conducted, entering the realm of sex crimes, sullied the green, white and orange of the Irish colors and are reflected in the broken mirror. |
