In this artwork, I am featuring the very beautiful Dorothy Dandridge; she was one of the most successful performers on stage and screen in America during the 1940s and 1950s. In 1955 she became the first African-American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Dorothy Dandridge was a very talented actress and a superb singer; she was also celebrated for her glamorous live performances which, given her exquisite beauty and physical grace, she was also able to successfully transfer to the screen. She was indeed born to be an entertainer. Her parents got separated before she was born and she grew up with her mother and sister. Dorothy Dandridge’s mother, Ruby Dandridge, was an aspiring entertainer; she created an act for Dorothy Dandridge and her sister Vivian and they toured the Southern United States for five years, rarely attending school. It was through the experience gained during this period that Dorothy Dandridge honed her artistic skills and talents. Dorothy Dandridge then moved to Hollywood, California where she successfully gained steady employment in radio and films. In this artwork, I wanted to show not just Dorothy Dandridge’s artistry, I also wanted to capture her style and elegance. She had a sweet, melodious singing style,, and an engaging stage presence and beauty, that captivated her audiences; and then there was her smile which shone through in her best performances.
