The image a 6x6 inch acrylic painting on canvas titled “Gifts of the Creator (Kitchi-Manitou) is what I consider to be my own personal interpretation of the event that occurred after the anishnaabe creation story and depicts Nanabooshoo connecting with Kitchi-Manitou (The Creator) asking for him to breathe new life onto the Island. It features the great turtle who sacrificed his body to bare the weight if the earth on his back. As well as the muskrat who sacrificed his life to get just a single handful of earth from deep below the water. That single handful of earth was placed on the back of the turtle by Nanaboosho. He was the only Anishnaabe who survived the great flood along with several other animals depicted in the painting. Nanabooshoo then asked Kitchi-Manitou if he could help them make a new earth. Moments later the single handful of earth began to grow. It grew and grew until it formed a mi-ni-si. (Island in the water) It continued to grow until the turtle was entirely covered and today that island is known as North America. Hi-res prints $20 plus shipping and handling.
