The bright green leaves which are very large and thick are used to hold and wrap foods when cooked. They were also heated on hot stones or coals and held against sore parts of bodies for the relief of muscle aches and strains and headaches. The stems are used in pipe making with crab claws as a bowl told tobacco. It grows to around 2 meters and is a spreading shrub. Flowers occur from June to November and are white and tubular.
