The Abstract World of Jim McGonigal
Jim McGonigal is a self-taught artist who favors the unconventionality of the abstract. He finds his inspiration from things encountered in daily life.
The artist finds his influence from Henri Matisse to Diego Rivera, and even some unlikely sources in pop culture such as Dr. Suess.
Jim McGonigal's present work is based on the idea of contradiction between hyper-activity and calmness. The goal is to create a unified whole by blending the subtle movements of the background with the explosiveness of the forground. The use of vivid color is to express the longing for the brighter things in life, while the splashes represent the fast pace and the inconsistancy of modern life.
In Jim McGonigal's point of view, art is a bridge over the mediocre and the mundane on the road to self-discovery and emotional freedom. It represents the artist's battle to find freedom from the heaviness of the trivial. His artwork is an attempt to find an oasis in the desert of the sterile conformity of daily life.
