Graduated from Atlanta College of Art in 1974 with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree. Studied under Ed Ross. Tony Greco, James Clover, among others. Smotz apprenticed with James Clover (Steel Sculpture) 1973 to 1975 in Atlanta, Georgia. He exhibited in several galleries in Ga. including Nassau Visions,Aronson Gallery,Gallery Benigne as well as the annual Callaway Gardens Invitational.
Moving to New Orleans, LA in 1978, he worked for Spangenburg Studios as supervisor for theme exhibits and trade shows. Later for Industrial Signs as a designer.
In 1984 Smotz was a major part of the production of the "Louisiana" exhibit for the Louisiana Worlds Fair. He likes to call it the "New Orleans Worlds Fair" and justifiably so. His involvement with the "Fair" did not keep him from excepting a contract with the United States Customs Office in New Orleans to repair,modify,and maintain the exhibit "Fakery" which was an exhibit of forged and faked products ranging from Ray-Ban sunglasses to aircraft parts. He said: These were highlights of my career."
Moved to New Smyrna Beach, Fl in1993 which is south of Daytona Beach. He worked for Daytona International Speedway Corporation(Facilities Department-sign production).
In 1997 Smotz and partner established Marsch Studios which produced faux acrylic polyurethane finished molded urethane and polyester resin castings for architectural sign companies involved in the high-end signage for hotels,malls,theme parks,resorts and cruise lines in central Florida.
He has exhibited in the New Smyrna Beach Arts and Crafts Shows-1998,2000,2003 and has enjoyed selling his art over the internet.
His paintings and sculpture are in private collections in Fairhope,Al ,Atlanta,Ga , New Orleans,La and Orlando,Fl. as well as selling giclee print editions in other markets across the U.S.
He now resides in Lake Mary, Fl and works daily in his studio.
