An artist's imagination can be magical and mystical and can take one to another place.
Local artist, Suzanne Holland of SunShineSuesCreations.com will be featured artist at Progress Energy Art Gallery through Sept. 27. (2008) The galleries First Friday reception will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1st.
The exhibit marks the first time the featured artist will be responsible for creating a window display for the gallery. The Progress Energy Art Gallery director, Karren Tolliver, stated in a press release: "Sue produces exremely finished and polished work. She has been a part of some recent exhibits and her work is impressive."
She is a gallery member and has participated in the art strolls in which the gallery coordinates, Tolliver added.
A mixed-media artist, Holland creates art from man made and natural elements, which include fabric, fallen palm tree items, palmetto fronds, buttons, jewelry and clocks.
She enhances the personality of these items through painting, fashioning parts out of polymer clay and other methods.
The final artwork often reflect Biblical, space age, time travel and exotic themes.
The artist describes herself as a "60s chic and Florida cracker artist being born and raised in Pinellas County but now resides in Port Richey.
In addition, she is a poet who has been published in literary magazine and newspapers which have included some of her photgraphy. Holland recently returned to writing and and the arts after raising three children. "It seems that God has finally opened the window of opportunity for me to return to my art and writing," she is quoted as saying.
Last year Holland won Judge's Special Merit Award from the Pasco Arts Council, of which she is a member. She says she loves to think outside the box with art, and enjoys the creative process when it takes over; especially when one project leads to another and the process flows. Other artists exhibiting are Marueen Bethke, Vicki Dewey and muralist Mariangela Smith.
Personal statement: When the creative process flows and one piece of art leads to another or pieces I need come into play at the precise moment needed, I know it is the hand of God guiding me, assisting me in the talent that he has gifted me with. Without God I am nothing.
My favorite quote from my favorite movie Field Of Dreams is this: There comes a time when all the cosmic tumblers click into place and the universe shows you what is possable. God is truly awesome!
