John Haanstra - John Haanstra's Artist Biography

My artworks are characterized by detailed backgrounds and balanced composition. To portray stories on canvas is my goal and challenge in creating a painting. My inspiration and passion is found in society in which humans are a central element.

I show a world of air, water and stone, with mysterious pillars surrounded by nudes and statues in my paintings. It's a unique world that leaves room for imagination.

Education

In principle, I was self-taught and started drawing and painting when I was thirteen. I have exhibited since I was sixteen at art markets in Amsterdam. After that I have followed an education at the Rijksacademie to develop my painting techniques further. After my education, I gained much experience and have expanded my visual impression by touring throughout North America. Nature and people were my greatest source of inspiration to draw paintings. Back on Dutch soil I have further developed myself.

In the Netherlands I have concentrated on paintings in the category of landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes. I have developed into a versatile artist and sold my oil paintings in the United States and Europe. Then I started HBA (Haanstra Business Art), where my target was in companies and institutions. However my passion was still more at surrealism and impressionism.

To this day I draw new paintings which fall in the category of surrealism and impressionism.

Exhibit

Several paintings of me are on display at my own atelier (by appointment) and at various exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad.
