Across the Street I started drawing and then painting Across The Street in December 2002; it has always been one of my favorite watercolors. I have sold several prints on watercolor paper some framed and some not framed, but have never wanted to part with the original which I still own. I have been asked on occasion what the painting meant; it didn’t seem to make sense to some why a mass of twisted tangled branches going in many different directions would be named Across the Street. How the idea for the painting came to me on one cold December day was right inside my home. As I sat on my living room sofa staring out the large picture window as I had done on many occasions; across the room from me you could see many things, my beautiful back yard full of several different plants and trees all dormant at that time of the year, a few wilting flowers and an occasional bird still looking for food. My house sat up high, higher than the neighbors on either side and much higher than the house across the street. From where I sat I must have looked across the street at the very tall trees hundreds of times, the fact that my house was so high I was only able to see the middle and tops of the trees, I never new and to this date still don’t know the kind of trees they were, as I sat enjoying the quiet and solitude it struck me what an interesting painting that would make with all of its twist and turns, ins and outs the variations in color and texture and not one green leaf left on the trees, just limbs, twigs and branches. I was intrigued, but the question in my mind was, can I do those beautiful trees justice. Drawing the picture was easy but painting it was a challenge, I would look and my drawing over and over but could never sit down to put paint on paper, then one day I walked into my small studio sat down and started what took a good 2 months if not more to complete. I can honestly say it’s still one of my favorite paintings, and now I know why …… Across the Street has taken on a new meaning for me personally, the house I spent so many years living, loving, painting and sitting on my sofa in the living room looking out of that large picture window is no longer mine to enjoy, it was a sad day the day I left that house, but I’ll always have AcrossThe Street to look at, it brings back many memories for me, and the beauty I saw every day from my sofa looking out the window at my yard and the beautiful trees across the street will always remain in my mind and heart.
