Man turns his steps in the path of life, back to the offspring, in awareness that the seeming march of civilization since the Antiquity is just a deterioration. The temple in the background symbolizes the birth of Western civilization. The decay of the civilization is depicted on both the left and the right of the painting. Each building reflects a different style and time. The more recent the buildings, the more decay. The scissors in the foreground are symbols of industry and mankind's obsession with materialism. The Architecture and Gods show the increasing decay on the way from the past to the present. Aphrodite (love). Dionysus (ecstasy), Ares (War), Hades (Underworld and decay).
